Florida: A Brief History

Florida, which means "full of flowers", was named by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon, overwhelmed by the bountiful flowers he saw when he landed in NE Florida in 1513. Around this time, written records about Florida actually began, possibly near present-day St. Augustine.

In 1565, the first permanent European settlement was established in St. Augustine by Spain and in 1821, Florida became a U. S. Territory. Florida was admitted as the 27th state of the United States on March 3, 1845.

Where is the Sunshine State Located?

The State of Florida is located on a large peninsula in the southeastern region of the United States with the Gulf of Mexico on its western shores and the Atlantic Ocean bordering the east coast.

Northern Florida touches the boundary lines of Georgia and Alabama.

Florida's Major Cities

Major cities in Florida are; Tallahassee, which is the state capital; Fort Lauderdale; Miami; Tampa; St. Petersburg; and, of course, includes Jacksonville, Florida's largest city.

These cities help to make Florida the 4th most populated state in the U.S. with an estimated population in 2006 of 18,089,888. It is the 22nd largest state in the USA and the nation's third fastest growing state.
