The
Sound at Beaufort South Carolina - It's Quiet
... For Now!
by Bob
Pardue
Even though as a stock
travel photographer I love to travel out west,
Florida and in to Canada but sometimes I tend to
forget about the beauty of my own home state of
South Carolina.
There are plenty of places
to travel in SC and, if you like the whirlwind
vacation, Myrtle Beach is fun and
lively.
But, sometimes I just like
to go somewhere to relax and Beaufort, South
Carolina really delivers in this
category.
Even though Beaufort is
basically a military town (Paris Island) it has
retained its quietness and charm through the
years. When you visit Beaufort you'll see what I
mean. Walking down the sidewalk and looking at
the quaint little shops you'll never realize
there is a marine base just a few miles
away.
Why
is Beaufort Such a Smorgasbord of Different
Tastes?
-
- Not only does Beaufort
have a "village" feel to it, you can travel
just 20 miles from town and visit
Hunting
Island with its
beach, jungle, and its very own lighthouse!
Where else can you find such a
variety?
- The
Movie Studios Love Beaufort
- Beaufort has been the
backdrop for many motion pictures such as
"Forrest Gump" starring Tom Hanks and also
parts of the movie, "The Prince of Tides" was
shot in Beaufort. "Forrest Gump" used Hunting
Island for the jungle scene when Forrest was
pulling all his buddies out from Viet Nam and
laid them on the beach.
- Beaufort
Attractions
- If you like the "old
south" you'll love Beaufort! With its
majestic old southern homes and village-like
atmosphere, you will feel as if you've been
transformed to a simpler time in history.
I've photographed many of these homes and am
awestruck by the beauty of them.

- Other
Beaufort attractions
include:
- The
Aquarium: (843)
524-6600
- Hunting
Island State Park featuring the
1873 lighthouse
- Parris
Island - You can tour Paris
Island and view exhibits. Tip:
Find out in advance about guided
tours. We only found them to
operate early in the mornings on
the days we were
there.
- The
Boardwalk: On the Boardwalk you
can relax in an outdoor swing
built for two and view the
magnificent Port Royal
Sound.
- Sheldon
Church: These are the ruins of
Sheldon Church which was visited
by the enemy in both the
Revolutionary and Civil Wars.
- You'll
find lots of other areas of
historic significance in Beaufort
too, like Brick Baptist
Church.

Getting
Around Beaufort
There are lots of ways to
see Beaufort. You can drive around and generally
be able to stop in front of many of the
attractions.
Or, you may want to
consider an alternative way to see the town. You
can take a Walking Tour like the Ghost of the
South or hire yourself a Horse & Buggy (with
driver of course).
Beaufort
Dining
Beaufort is known for its
seafood and shrimp (remember Bubba Gump?) so be
sure and try out some of the local cuisine while
you're there. Go when you are very hungry
because people of South Carolina love to eat and
they love to see everyone else eat
too!
Also, there are plenty of
other options including your basic fast food
restaurants to make sure you shouldn't have to
go hungry.
And, be sure to try some
Gullah Grub before you leave. Don't ask me what
this is!
Experience
Beaufort for Yourself
As with any travel
destination, it's really tough to describe the
complete Beaufort, SC experience. All I can say
is, "Once you visit Beaufort, you'll want to
come back again". It is just that kind of town.
To coin a phrase, Beaufort is "My kind of town".
Ya'll Come!
