Planning Your Beach
Vacation
Everybody loves the beach!
Your children can dig in the sand and splash in
the lapping waves. The older kids can swim, get
a tan, or just relax.
The inquisitive types can
explore for sea life, tide pools, and drift
wood. The warm breezes and natural beauty of the
beach are invigorating and calming.
A beach vacation, or any
other trip, however, can be discomforting if you
do not plan it well. Here are some things you
can do to make your beach vacation easier,
safer, and more fun.

Preparing for
Your Beach Holiday
In many parts of
the world, people head for their beach
holidays in the family car.
When planning
your trip to the beach, it's always a
good idea to give the car a good
cleaning out
|
first. This way, you'll have more room for
your luggage. Before starting on your beach
vacation, pack your glove box. Include a few
first aid and comfort items, such as sun block,
acetaminophen for headaches, a roll of antacids,
a few cough drops, and a few band
aids.
Other Tid-Bits For
Traveling With Children
- Remember to include a
couple of scrunchies or ponytail holders for
long hair.
- Have your tires
checked for wear and air pressure and replace
any that are likely to go flat.
- Change your oil if
your mileage is close. Road trips are not
much fun when they include breakdowns. To
enjoy your beach trip, you have to get there
first.
- And whatever you do,
make sure you have a current map or Atlas and
a place to keep it handy. You can also map
your trip online by using sites such as
Map
Quest TM.
The
Children, The Beach Vacation, and The
Challenge
Traveling with kids is
always a challenge. They may be particularly
excited and impatient when they know they are
going on a beach vacation.
Bring along cool water
bottles and some healthy snacks to munch. Try a
simple car game to make the time
pass.
Many kids like looking for
letters of the alphabet on signs. If several
people get involved it can be quite
fun.
Thank goodness, in the
digital age, there's also handheld video games,
books on tape / c.d., and even DVD players so
that the kids can watch their favorite movies
during the extra long beach trips.
What
About Skin Safety for the Beach?
Particularly with beach
holidays, your always want to provide for skin
safety. Be particularly careful about laying out
on that sunny beach for long stretches of time
between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
Use a sun block with a
high SPF rating and replace it after getting wet
or drying off with your towel.
The type of towel you
choose can make a difference too. Thick towels
get heavy and tend to trap a lot of sand. Thin
towels may be a better choice for the
beach.
Wear sunglasses to protect
your eyes and sandals or some other type of foot
protection to keep your feet from being burned
on the hot sand.
Make
It an Enjoyable Beach Holiday
With just a little
preparation your beach vacation can be enjoyable
and problem-free.
After you're back home and
have shaken the sand out of your pants, you will
be relaxed, refreshed, and ready for work.
You'll still be relishing the memories of your
beach vacation and thinking about all the fun in
the sun you enjoyed.
Now, before totally
relaxing, go ahead and unpack, and get your
laundry going. It won't be long until the kids
will be shouting, "When can we go on another
beach holiday?"
Island
Beach Vacations
Island beach vacations are
a great way to get away from it all. Don't get
me wrong not every island vacation
involves going to the middle of nowhere. You
could go to Cape Cod, Mackinac Island, or one of
many other inhabited islands and still enjoy a
relaxing getaway.
Even so, I have always
thought that there is something about island
vacations that separates them from other kinds
of trips. No matter what kind of island you are
on, being surrounded by all that water on all
sides somehow makes you let go of your
connection to your home, if only for a few days.
You might only be a few
miles away, but the fact that you are separated
by such a substantial gulf of water somehow
makes it seem much further. It is the perfect
setting to let your troubles slip
away.
Of course my favorite
beach vacations in the islands are the ones that
afford a greater degree of isolation. For me,
the more remote your location the better. I like
going to islands that are not even connected to
the mainland by a bridge. If I can do some
backwoods camping, I tend to enjoy the situation
even more. Mackinac Island is okay, for example,
but what I really like is going to Isle
Royale.
I suppose that, for me,
island vacations really feed some childhood
fantasies. I was a big fan of Robinson Crusoe
and other shipwreck stories when I was a kid,
and I used to dream of finding myself a castaway
on a far-off deserted island.
When I'm on an almost
deserted island trip in the middle of nowhere, I
can almost believe that this is my situation.
When there are no aircraft, cars, or roads to
disturb you for miles around, it feels like
you're in a primal state of nature again. It
truly is a glorious feeling.
Of course, there are some
vacation islands that are more geared towards
people with more luxurious tastes. I have a
friend who loves to take all in one vacation
packages to island getaways.
One year, he even got
together with about a hundred other friends and
rented a whole luxury island resort together.
They said that it was one of the best vacation
trips they have ever had.
The funny thing was that I
wasn't 200 miles away, camping out on my own
deserted corner of a wild island. It seems like
everyone had a great beach holiday trip that
year!
