Save Money when You Travel by Using Credit Cards

Travel Tips - Money on the Go

This article was written to answer many of the most frequently asked questions on the topic of travel. I hope you find all of this information helpful.

Everybody needs some money when they start out on a vacation, whether the trip is across the state or across the Pacific Ocean. Specifically when it comes to credit cards, there are a few things to make certain of when preparing for your trip.

Got Credit Cards?

Take your major credit cards along, MasterCard, Visa, and American Express.

Make sure they are all credit cards, and not just debit cards. Numerous locations will more than likely require a credit card as opposed to a debit card.

Also, you will want to leave all your local store credit cards at home, which will just weigh your pocketbook down.

You may want to inform your credit card company or companies before a trip if you will be gone for an extended duration or if you are traveling a long distance. They may delay you if they are uninformed of your travel. The novel spending patterns might cause them to suspect that there is falsified activity on the card. Additionally, they will be able to explain the services they can provide to you while you are on your trip.

You will be pleasantly surprised at how your credit card company can help you prepare for your trip. Here are a few ways to use your credit card company as an advantage to travel...

  • You can set up to pay bills that will come due while you are gone. This way you will be protected from those overdue charges and may even prevent having utilities disconnected which would result in expensive reconnection fees.
  •
  • They will be in the know that you will be making charges from another territory. I have been in a situation where my credit card was questioned because of making too many charges in a different state so this is invaluable to insuring you have a valid credit card when you need it for travel expenses.
  •
  • They will be able to provide you a suggestion of how passable their credit card is in that particular country. A nightmare scenario is to arrive at your destination with a credit card no one will accept. Be sure your card is valid in all countries your are visiting on your holiday! --- Before you go!
  •
  • They can verify acceptance at predetermined alien locations. Do local retailers accept the credit card you are carrying with you? Find out in advance!
  •
  • The credit card company will be able to see if your PIN number will work in the countries you are visiting. They can also issue you another PIN number if your present PIN is unallowable to the foreign bank's organization. You may get to your travel destination and find that you need extra cash only to find that your PIN number does not operate in this particular vacation spot. Now what?
  •
  • Using your credit card to interpret cash advance, ATM, foreign purchase and foreign exchange rate policies and fees will also save you some cash. This list could go on and on but I believe you have the picture. Preparedness will save you money and heartaches when you travel so don't leave these things to chance. After all, vacations are meant to be fun and relieve stress!

Use your credit card when traveling, and you will likely get a better exchange rate than changing the money on your own. And, you wont risk your safety by carrying and showing large amounts of cash. Just be sure to keep track of how much you spend. It is easy to lose track with the exchange rates.

I hope this report about using a credit card when traveling to your vacation destination will be useful to you the next time you plan a family trip to another state or a different country. Stay ahead of your vacationing competition (other vacationers and business travelers) by knowing how to take advantage of all your credit card company has available. You'll be happy you did!
